Drake Relays Names All-Century Athletes

Posted:

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -- Sprinters Michael Johnson and Gwen Torrence have been named the Drake Relays overall men's and women's Athletes of the Century.

The pair was named to the list Wednesday, joining 18 other athletes who were recognized earlier. All 20 of the athletes will be honored April 23 at Drake University's Knapp Center.

Johnson and Torrence combined for 14 Drake Relays individual titles, including four Drake Relays records.

Johnson won four Olympic gold medals and became the only athlete to win the 200- and 400-meter races in the same Olympics in 1996. He holds the world record in the 400 at 43.18.

Torrence is a five-time Olympic medalist, including three gold medals.

The 100th running of the relays will be held April 22-25.
