Buddy Check 7: Beyond Pink TEAM

by Danielle Wagner

WATERLOO (KWWL) The only local breast cancer coalition in our area is working hard to support men and women during a difficult time.

The Beyond Pink TEAM began in 1988.

Today, about 20 community members are part of the coalition raising money for local cancer patients.

Mary Seitz is a breast cancer survivor. She was diagnosed in December 2007. Now, she's helping other cancer victims and survivors as part of the Beyond Pink TEAM.

"I went to my first young survivors meeting in spring 2008, and I was very impressed with the information I received from there the support. I wanted to be a part of that," said Mary Seitz.

The third Friday of each month, Seitz and other survivors, community members and health professionals meet.

The Beyond Pink TEAM is a local cancer coalition working to provide advice, financial help and medical services to men and women.

"People want to help. People like the idea their money is staying local and is gonna help people they know," said Gabbi DeWitt.

A big fundraiser for the Beyond Pink TEAM is the annual Pink Ribbon Run organized by Cedar Falls Community Main Street.

"They give all that money to us. They have wonderful sponsors. All money comes to us and we put that money back into the community. We help with medical bills, rent, gas, utilities things that patients need when going through breast cancer and treatment is so expensive," said DeWitt.

If you or someone you know is battling cancer or has battled cancer, members of the Beyond Pink TEAM want you to know you're not alone and help is available.

"It can take you from feeling like a victim to a survivor," said Seitz.
