Iowa Ag Department considers furloughs

DES MOINES (KWWL,AP)--  The 400 agency workers with the Iowa Agricultural Department may have to take a few unpaid days off to offset budget cuts.

Ag Secretary Bill Northey says the one or two furlough days would happen before June 30.

Northey's department is dealing with a 1.5 percent budget cut . The agency was also hit with hundreds of thousands of dollars in deappropriations.

Before a furlough days can be scheduled, Northey says his agency has to examine their impact on positions such as state meat and dairy inspectors who help drive commercial business.

He says there also are union rules and other factors to consider.
