North Cedar motel still rebuilding after flood

by Danielle Wagner

CEDAR FALLS (KWWL) An extended stay motel in the North Cedar area is still trying to re-open after last year's flood.

All 15 units in the Shady Rest Motel in Cedar Falls were gutted and are in the process of being rebuilt.

The owners did not have flood insurance and didn't qualify for help through the Small Business Association.

Instead, Reverend Maureen Doherty with St. Andrew Episcopal Chuch in Waverly helped secure about $80,000 through the Diocese of Iowa's Office of Disaster Relief and Recovery and Episcopal Relief and Development's Midwest Flood Relief.

The goal is to have at least two units open in June and the rest by August.

Volunteers and appliances are still needed to get the Shady Rest Motel open again. Contact 319-750-0338 or click here to help.
