Iowa continues to improve seat belt use

KWWL - Seat belt use across the nation is at an all-time high, while traffic fatalities reached a record low.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, seat belt use reached 83%percent in 2008.

Michigan had the highest rate of compliance at just more than 97%
Massachusetts had the lowest with 67%.

Iowa's compliance rate for 2008 was 92.9%.
It's the 7th consecutive improvement since 2001 when 80.9% of drivers buckled up.

Iowa is one of 16 states to achieve use rates of 90% or higher.

See the report here.

Increased seat belt use is one reason why 2008 saw a dramatic drop in traffic fatalities.
More than 37,000 lives were lost on U.S. roads in 2008, but that's the lowest figure since 1961.
