Former small-town mayor killed in fire

FAYETTE (AP) -- The former mayor of Iowa's smallest incorporated town has died in a fire.

Matthew Porter, 92, was killed after a fire broke out in his farmhouse in rural Fayette.

Porter was the mayor of Donnan for 35 years. With a population of seven people, it was for many years Iowa's smallest incorporated town. The town voted to disincorporate in 1990.

Passersby spotted the fire at about 5 p.m. on Friday. Firefighters discovered Porter unconscious in a chair in his living room.

Porter was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
