UNI Softball earns 2nd sweep

EVANSVILLE, Indiana (KWWL) - The UNI softball team rallied to win, 2-1, in a 10-inning battle over Evansville today to complete the series sweep over the Purple Aces. The Panthers won in extra innings for the second straight game and scored the final two runs of the contest. The Panthers improve to 8-3 in Missouri Valley Conference play and 24-11 overall on the season, while the Purple Aces fall to 8-23 on the season and 0-13 overall. The Panthers are 5-1 in extra inning games this season.

Junior Rachel Gerking's MVC-leading 34th RBI of the season drove in the winning run for the Panthers in the top of the 10th inning. Gerking drove in freshman Mackenzie Daigh after she walked to start the inning.

Junior Jen Larsen (13-5) earned her second win in the three-game series after she pitched a complete-game four-hitter and also struck out three batters. Larsen was extremely efficient in her two appearances this weekend against the Purple Aces, only allowing one run and 10 hits in 17 innings of work. Kylie Wagner (4-12) took the loss for Evansville after pitching a complete game 11-hitter.

The Purple Aces scored the games first run and their only run of the game after Kristen Shirk's solo home run in the bottom of the third inning to jump out to a 1-0 lead.

Down to their last out UNI junior Megan Machovec's RBI triple to left field knotted up the score to force extra innings. The triple was the fifth of the season for Machovec and her 11th of her career.

Larsen was able to get herself out of a bases loaded jam in the bottom of the ninth after Evansville's Lissa Fehlman grounded out to Larsen to end the inning.

The Panthers (8-3) currently are tied for third in the MVC standings with Southern Illinois (7-3). The Panthers currently trail MVC leader Creighton (7-1) and Drake (6-2).
