Culver offers revised budget

DES MOINES (AP) -- Gov. Chet Culver is sending the Legislature a revamped state budget that slashes nearly 8 percent from most state spending programs next year.

Culver's plan calls for pouring in $674 million in federal stimulus money to avoid even deeper cuts.

Under the proposed budget released Friday, the state would spend $5.928 billion during the current year and $5.896 billion in the next fiscal year. The revised budget for next year is down about $300 million from what the governor originally sought before a worsening economy forced him to reduce his spending plan.
