First event for Riverloop Expo Plaza waits on construction

WATERLOO (KWWL) -As the weather warms up, so does excitement for My Waterloo Days.

Thursday, festival organizers announced the band Great White will headline the festival.

Also generating excitement -- a brand new venue.

My Waterloo Days will be the first big event held at the Riverloop Expo Plaza.

The two-block area is still under construction between Park Ave. and W. 3rd St. in Waterloo.

Workers are pouring cement along the area that will be known as the Riverloop Expo Plaza.

It's just one piece of the construction puzzle that will transform this two-block area into what city leaders expect to be a centerpiece of downtown renaissance.

Jay Stoddard will be one of the first to see the transformation up close.

He's the executive director for My Waterloo Days.

"They've made much more progress in the last 3 or 4 days than they've made, frankly, in the last 3 or 4 months so everybody's on the fast track to get everything done," said Stoddard.

He says the stage has been bought, vendors lined up for the 4 days of food, music, and activiites.

"We've never had these many things all in one compact area and a lot of work has gone into the organization and layout of this entire thing so it's set up for success," said Stoddard.

Stoddard says another plus of the location is its surrounded by buildings so that if bad weather approaches, people can seek shelter.

"We'll have huge tents, a beautiful public market building and we're on this beautiful brick overlay. We don't have mud. This is beautiful," said Stoddard.

Still with 8 weeks before the festival, there's a long way to go before the stage is set.
