Critics warn against proposed changes to your taxes

DES MOINES (KWWL) -- More criticism Tuesday night at a public hearing in the state legislature on a proposed change to the way you do your taxes.

A bill in front of the Iowa house would end federal deductability -- meaning you could no longer deduct your federal income tax from your state taxes.

Critics call that a tax on a tax, saying it would discourage businesses looking to move to Iowa.

Supporters say the move would allow the state to lower iowa's tax rates.

The impact on your taxes: Hard to say, according to the Iowa department of Revenue. In a Des Moines Register article, the department says 49% of Iowans would see lower taxes, while roughly 33% would see higher taxes. The rest would see no change.

The house could debate the bill as early as Thursday.
