Polypill replaces multiple drugs

Waterloo (KWWL) - Combining several heart medications into one pill can lower the risk for heart disease and stroke nearly as well as taking all the medications separately.

Researchers in Canada and India studied 2,000 adults with heart disease risks. Some took a "polypill" a medication that combined an aspirin, a cholesterol-lowering drug called a statin, and three blood pressure drugs. Others took the individual drugs.

They found people taking the polypill had lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels. Another benefit, experts say the more pills patients need to take, they are less likely to stick to their them, so combining all the drugs could improve their benefit.
