Lighting the Special Olympic torch

Cedar Falls (KWWL) - Cheers and applause filled the air as the Northeast Iowa Special Olympic torch was lit.

On Sunday, 350 participants competed in a variety of events. These athletes have been training since december and the blue ribbon winners will go on to the state competition in ames.

"We see everybody from people in wheelchairs all the way to people that can play golf and throw a softball farther than you and I put together. It's just a big big difference, but we enjoy having lots of different levels because everyone competes against someone with their own background," said Joe Wilson, Special Olympics Director.

450 people volunteered to make this event happen.
