Cedar Rapids police officer injured

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) - Just before midnight Sunday, Cedar Rapids Police responded to a robbery in the 1600 block of 1st Avenue Northeast. Investigators were told there were three black males, possibly juveniles, wearing black jackets and jeans had a hand gun.

Police say the three suspects took off with money.

Officer Tim Davis and his partner, Officer Tracy Brumbaugh were near the area and responded. They were in an unmarked car and were wearing plain clothing. As they approached 1st Ave & 16 St east, they observed 3 black males wearing black jackets and jeans walking across  A Ave and 16 St NE. 

They pulled in front of the three. As they exited their vehicle, they identified themselves by name and with their badge. Two of the males turned and ran from Officer Brumbaugh. She gave chase. The two split and Officer Brumbaugh lost sight of the one she was pursuing. A citizen called the Cedar Rapids Police Department to say that a male was sitting on the front porch in the 1600 blk C Ave NE.

When officers arrived, they found Robert Lee Watkins III, 6-14-94, on the porch, out of breath. When Officers arrived at the police car, they found Officer Tim Davis, unconscious and the individual gone. Officer Tim Davis was transported to St. Luke's and then later flown to the University of Iowa where he is undergoing surgery for head injury. 

Robert Watkins was arrested and charged with Robbery 1st and Interference with Official Acts Causing Serious Injury. He was transported to Linn County Detention.
