M-D-A Lockup day April 1 - KWWL - Eastern Iowa Breaking News, Weather, Closings

M-D-A Lockup day April 1

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) The jail will be full on April Fool's day, and The Muscular Dystrophy Association will benefit as a result. The annual M-D-A lockup day is coming up April 1.

Prominent Cedar Rapids and surrounding area citizens are being accused of "having a big heart for Jerry's kids."  They're volunteering to be "arrested and serve time" for one hour between 10 AM - 3 PM in a mock jail at Veteran's Memorial Stadium in Cedar Rapids on Wednesday, April 1, 2009 in an effort to raise money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

Over 130 Cedar Rapids area executives and civic leaders are expected to serve their sentences "behind bars" for MDA at Veteran's Memorial Stadium. Jailbirds will be escorted to "jail" by "paddywagons" from Mickey Chrysler Dodge. While they're there they will have their mug shots taken and then be sentenced for having a "big heart" before going "behind bars for good!"

MDA would like to thank the Cedar Rapids Kernels, Texas Roadhouse, Dr. Pepper Snapple Group and Mickey Chrysler Dodge for their support of the "Strike Out ALS" Lock-up.

The funds raised will help MDA fund local research at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. MDA provides patient care services to over 400 individuals in Eastern Iowa who have been diagnosed with one of 43 neuromuscular diseases.  These services include making payments and repairs on wheelchairs, leg braces and communication devices, sending youngsters ages 6-17 to Summer Camp at Camp Courageous in Monticello, and providing support groups.

Anyone interested in planning or participating in an MDA Lock-Up can contact the local MDA office at 319-393-8905.
