Expanding Iowa's unemployment benefits

Des Moines (KWWL) - Iowa is the first state to begin sending federal stimulus money to those who lost their jobs in the recession.

Wednesday Governor Culver signed into law a $71 million expansion of the state's unemployment benefit system. The measure eliminates a waiting period before unemployed Iowans can collect benefits, and adds 26 weeks of benefits for workers who enroll in a job training program.

"To provide Iowans who have lost their jobs during thie economic downturn with the help they need including time to get training to get new skills to help find a new job," said Culver.

The new bill also gives businesses a tax break when temporary workers are hired to replace deployed National Guard troops.
