Loras College hosts "To Do Justice" Dachau War Trial event

NEWS RELEASE:

DUBUQUE, Iowa --- The Loras College Arts & Culture Series will present the riveting story of the 1945 Dachau War Trial in a day-long event, To Do Justice, on Wednesday, April 1, from 11 a.m. - 6 p.m. in the Marie Graber Ballroom of the Alumni Campus Center.

The Dauchau War Trial tried 40 Germans at the end of World War II for their war crimes. The event, which discusses the proceedings of the trial, ties into the Holocaust theme adopted by Loras College for the 2008-09 academic year. Its exploration brings to light one of the most important trials of the 20th century and highlights the importance of a justice system.

The event will begin at 11 a.m. with viewing of the documentary, "Voices from the Holocaust," by Emmy-nominated filmmaker Joshua Greene. The film will be followed by lunch and a talk by former Des Moines Register columnist and Loras honorary degree recipient Chuck Offenberger, discussing the importance of workshops such as this and the current playing out of similar ethical issues today.

The presentation on the Dachau War Trial will begin at 1 p.m. and last until 5p.m. Greene will present on the case made by the prosecution while Douglas Bates, III, son of the defense attorney, will present on the case made by the defense. Bates witnessed firsthand the affect the trial had on his father, who fought against the Nazis and was then assigned to defend them in the Dachau trial. Loras students Chase Gruszka and John Healey will re-enact the original closing arguments from both sides. Afterward, a group of law professionals will be present for a panel discussion moderated by Loras Regent Theresa Hoffman.

Members of the Loras and Dubuque communities are welcome to attend. The event is free to the public and lunch and snacks will be provided. There will be 5.00 CLE credits available for area attorneys at a cost of $75.

Registration for the event is required. Please contact Valorie Woerdehoff at (563) 588-7565.
