Rhoads earns popularity points

AMES- As the Iowa State Cyclones begin sprong practice, they have a new coach for the third time in the last four years.  Ankeny native Paul Rhoads is already receiving an "A" from his new student-athletes.

Leonard Johnson says he loves his new coach.  "He is an awesome guy.  He wants to get to know you personally and everything about you and everyone on the team," says the sophomore cornerback.

The big men agree.  "He's excited about being here, he really wants to be heere and you can pick up on it" says senior defensive tackle Nate Frere.

Rhoads is determined to make the Cyclones a tougher team in 2009.

"It's paramount to the success of what we do. There's two kinds of toughness that we talk about all the time; physical toughness and mental toughness. Now, you've got to be mentally tough before you can be physically tough. We won't see much of the physical toughness until Friday when we put the pads on but football is a violent, physical game and toughness is at the top of the list when it comes to playing it well," says the first year head coach.
