Pancakes for helmets in Nashua

NASHUA (KWWL) -- About 200 kids in Nashua will be receiving bike helmets thanks to fundraising efforts by police.  A pancake breakfast Sunday in Nashua is helping the Officer Friendly Program reach its fundraising goal of $6,000.  Once the program reaches that goal, officers will give the helmets out to kids in Nashua-Plainsfield Schools.

"I think its a problem everywhere, the youth not wearing the helmets and the slightest impact of a head injury could cause life aftering affects," said Nashua police officer Paul Becthold.

Becthold responded to a motor vehicle and bike accident involving a child without a helmet two years ago.  The child was not injured, but the possibility of damage made Becthold concerned.  The idea of getting the kids helmets evolved from that incident.

Becthold hopes the free helmets will make riding bikes safer for kids and also hopes the results will spiral up to older students and adults.
