Eastern Iowan celebrates 104th birthday

CEDAR FALLS (KWWL)-- Veronica (Verna) Wells has lived through two world wars, 38 years past her husband,  and celebrated her 104th Birthday this week.

Wells grew up in St. Lucas, Iowa, and lived there until she moved to Nebraska with her husband.  During the last century, she was an elevator operator for eleven years and kept the house for priests clean for 30 years.

"Growing up did you have birthday parties?" Her son asked.

"No, we never heard of them," replied Verna, but she has since had many. At her hundredth, she made some of the food.

Up until two years ago Verna lived on her own until she fell outside.  Now she lives in the Cedar Falls Western Home.

Her secret to a long life is to...

"Keep busy. I was always busy no matter what. If the church would have a dinner, I would bake a pie and whatever they wanted and it was never that I didn't have something to do."

She still keeps a tight schedule.  After almost ninety years of crocheting, she still makes afghans.

Just a few days ago, her doctor told her that she needs to keep crocheting to keep away her arthritis.
