Prevention poison in the home

Waterloo (KWWL) - Can your children access prescription drugs or toxic chemicals in your home?

More than a million children are exposed to poisonous substances each year, according to the American Association of Poison Control. Iowa specialists are working to prevent dangerous situations during this National Poison Prevention Week.

Nine out of ten child poisonings occur in the home, most of them are with involve prescription drugs. Iowa's Poison Control Center typically gets 50-thousand calls a year.

Most of the calls are about children under age six, which are high-risk because most kids in that range can't read, and think everything has to go in their mouths.

It's important for parents to take safety steps such as removing household cleaning products and drain cleaners from under the sink, putting all medications out of reach and sight, and putting child safety latches on all drawers containing harmful products.

The Iowa Poison Control Center toll free number is 800-222-1222. It is available 24-hours a day.
