UI football player pleads not guilty to assault

IOWA CITY (KWWL) -- According to the University of Iowa Athletic Department, football defensive end Adrian Clayborn pleaded not guilty to a charge of assault causing bodily injury.

The charge stemmed from an incident in January involving Clayborn and an Iowa City taxi driver.

"I've been aware of the this alleged incident since January and consider it to be a serious situation. Based on what I know to this point, I think it is best to let due process run its course before coming to any judgement," Iowa Head Football Coach Kirk Ferentz said in a news release on Friday.

Clayborn is a junior and started 11 games and played in all 13 games for the Hawkeyes last season.

If convicted, Clayborn could face up to a year in jail and a $1,500 fine.
