Regents order pay freeze at state universities

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) -- Iowa's Board of Regents unanimously approved Thursday a resolution directing the state's three public universities to freeze the salaries of non-union employees for 2009-2010.

Regents president David Miles says the move is necessary because of state budget cuts. They are expected to total more than 10 percent this year and next year combined at the University of Iowa, Iowa State University and the University of Northern Iowa.

The regents also approved an early retirement incentive plan for Iowa State.

ISU president Gregory Geoffroy called the plan an urgent need to help deal with budget cuts that total $31 million for Iowa State alone.
