Waterloo-Cedar Falls only metro in U.S. with no rise in unemployment

WATERLOO (KWWL) -- A new government report shows the Cedar Valley is the only metro area in the country that didn't see a rise in unemployment in the past year.

The Labor Department looked at the unemployment rate in 372 metropolitan areas. Jobless rates rose in 99.7 percent of the cities compared to a year ago, and areas of California were the hardest hit. But, Waterloo-Cedar Falls remained steady at 4.4 percent.

Fourteen metros had unemployment rates above 15 percent in January. Ten are in California, including El Centro. It has the nation's highest jobless rate of 24.2 percent.

Next is Merced, Calif., at 18.9 percent, followed by Elkhart-Goshen, Ind., at 18.3 percent.
