UI medical students celebrate "Match Day"

IOWA CITY (KWWL)- Today is the day University of Iowa medical students have been waiting for.

"Match Day" is when graduating med students across the country find out where they will begin their medical residencies.

This annual event is the culmination of the students' education, marking the beginning of their careers as resident physicians.

One doctor-to-be from Waterloo brought support for the milestone.

"Today I actually made my cousin come and open the envelope for me and I've looked at it like five times to make sure it's real," said Nadia Juneja, a UI Medicine Student headed to begin her residency in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

"When I think about it, it's on par with getting married or having a child, it's got that profound of an impact on their life, " said Doctor Chris Cooper, Associate Dean of Student Affairs.

143 UI medical students received their residency assignments today... 34 will remain in Iowa for their first year.
