Judge denies request to move Agriprocessors trial

DES MOINES (AP) -- A federal judge has denied a kosher slaughterhouse and its former manager's request to move their trial out of Iowa because of pretrial publicity.

In an order filed Wednesday, Chief Judge Linda Reade denied the motion by Agriprocessors Inc. and former manager Sholom Rubashkin.

Rubashkin, former manager of the Agriprocessors Inc. plant in Postville, asked that his trial be moved from Cedar Rapids to Minneapolis or Chicago. He faces multiple immigration charges, along with bank fraud and money laundering charges.

Agriprocessors joined in the motion.

Reade says there is a substantial gap between the "zenith" of bad press in the case and the September trial date.

Nearly 400 people were arrested in a May immigration raid at the plant.
