UNDATED (KWWL) - If you can't afford a gym membership and you can't get there very often, there are some simple things you can do to keep burning those calories.
The trick is to become more active in everything you do.
You may not think of your daily routines as part of an effective weight loss plan, but think again.
"This is where our body is moving around, we're getting up out of our chair, we're sitting up straight, our shoulders are back, we're lifting water bottles at home," said family physician Dr. Jane Sadler. "We might be standing on the phone, but we're walking around, we are not sedentary, and that's the most important thing."
Sadler said the more you move, the less likely you are to store fat. It's a medically-proven theory called non-exercise activity thermogenesis or NEAT.
"Some studies show that neat can actually burn up to 350 calories a day, even more, and that's just people moving around a little bit more, using their arms in conversations, fidgeting," said Sadler."
"You don't feel like you're going that far but just the trips all through the house, up and down," said Sherri Sharp who does extra work around the house to stay slim.
So take the stairs more. Or while you're sitting at your desk, lift water bottles. And as Dr. Sadler said, even the way you sit can make a difference.
"It's so easy to get slovenly and to relax our shoulders and our belly. But if you tighten up here, you're holding your posture, you're using your core muscles, your abs and your back," said Sadler.
And if you're naturallly jittery, you might have an advantage.
