Judge says no to joining trials in child's death

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -- A judge has denied a request to join the trials of a Coggon man and woman charged  charged in the death of their young daughter.

Lee Muldoon is accused of first-degree murder in the beating death of 2-year-old Skylar Inman last July. The child lived with Muldoon and her mother, Brianna Volesky.

Volesky is charged with child neglect and child endangerment causing death.

Prosecutors wanted the two tried together, arguing the evidence against both defendants is "almost identical."

Volesky's attorney objected, saying a joint trial would put Volesky at a disadvantage in terms of preparation because she was arrested five months after Muldoon.

Muldoon's attorney didn't object to joining the cases.
