Absentee ballot bill aims to speed up Iowa election results

Posted:

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -- County election officials would be required to count absentee ballots the day before the general election under legislation overwhelmingly approved by the Iowa House.

The House approved the measure on a 76-22 vote on Tuesday, sending it to the Senate where approval also is likely.

Republicans and Democrats have increasingly turned to absentee ballots to build voter turnout.

But, procedures vary on when those ballots are counted, which has caused delays in tabulating unofficial election totals in some close contests.

Rep. Mary Gaskill, D-Ottumwa, a main backer of the proposal, says that under the bill, county election officials would be banned from releasing results until polls close on Election Day.
