Iowan killed in snowmobile crash

DEADWOOD, S.D. (AP)-- One Iowan has died and two were hurt in separate snowmobile crashes in the Black Hills of South Dakota.

Lawrence County police say 40-year-old Tracy Van De Pol of Ankeny, Iowa, died Sunday morning after a snowmobile driven by her mother struck a tree in the Black Hills.

Van De Pol's 66-year-old mother, Joyce Carle of Fort Dodge, Iowa, suffered serious injuries and was taken to Rapid City Regional Hospital. Police say neither speed nor alcohol contributed to the accident, which occurred west of Deadwood near the Wyoming border.

In a separate accident Sunday afternoon, 50-year-old Darwin Phillips of Pierson, Iowa, crashed his snowmobile south of Lead and was treated at Lead-Deadwood Regional Hospital. He was charged with suspicion of drunken driving.
