Corridor Career Fair April 25

Posted:

Cedar Rapids-KWWL) Corridor area employers have until Wednesday, March 25, 2009, to reserve space for the 14th Annual Corridor Career Fair scheduled for Saturday, April 25, 2009, at the Michael J Gould Kirkwood Recreation Center on the main Kirkwood campus in Cedar Rapids.

Registrations are slightly lower, but still on pace with 2008, according to Mary Willie, Product Manager for CorridorCareers.com.  "We're very pleased with the number of local companies, from both ends of the Corridor, who have registered for this year's fair and expect a strong push this last week.  We anticipate lower participation than last year, but many businesses have told our group that they rely on this event as an annual recruiting opportunity."

Companies interested in participating are encouraged to log on to CorridorCareers.com and follow the Corridor Career Fair link.

Although unemployment numbers have been on the rise, the state of Iowa and the Cedar Rapids/Iowa City Corridor are still seeing employment opportunities.  CareerBuilder.com recently ranked the state of Iowa sixth in its list of best states to find work and Iowa City as eighth in its list of top 30 markets to find a job.

More than 1,100 job seekers attended last year's fair and record attendance is expected this year.  "Considering the effects of last summer's floods and the current economic climate, we anticipate higher attendance this year," said Kari Lammer, Workforce Services Director for Priority One in Cedar Rapids.

"In addition to meeting with Corridor employers, job seekers can also attend various workshops including a human resources panel and a presentation on Skills Advantage and the Iowa National Career Readiness Certificate," added DaLayne Williamson, Workforce Services Director for the Iowa City Area Development Group.  "This event is part of a larger effort to attract and retain a skilled workforce in the Corridor."

The Corridor Career Fair is hosted by a growing partnership of area organizations and schools committed to workforce development in the Corridor, including the Cedar Rapids Chamber of Commerce, Gazette Communications, the Iowa City Area Development Group, Iowa Workforce Development, Kirkwood Community College, Priority One of Cedar Rapids, and the University of Iowa.  New partners this year include Coe College, Cornell College, Kaplan University and Mount Mercy College.
