Hawkeye to host Senior Companion open house

(Waterloo-KWWL) The Senior Companion Program (SCP) of Hawkeye Community College will be hosting a Spring Open House to invite the public to learn more about the volunteer opportunities available through the program.  The event will take place on Friday, March 27, from 1:00 - 3:00 p.m. at the Hawkeye's Metro Center, 844 W. 4th Street in Waterloo.  The event is free and open to the public.  No RSVP or reservation is required to attend.

Current SCP staff and volunteers will be present to answer questions and explain the duties of senior companions.  Applications and on-the-spot interviews will be available for those interested in joining the program.  The event will also feature refreshments and door prizes.

"Being a Senior Companion is a very rewarding experience for our volunteers," said Ann Crawford, recruiter for the SCP.  "This event is a chance for those interested to come out and see what it's like to work with us in a casual, friendly environment.  We hope that hearing the stories of current companions will inspire others to get involved."

Senior Companions are volunteers who support their peers by assisting other seniors with daily tasks and providing companionship at their homes.  As a result, many deserving seniors have the opportunity to remain living independently in their own homes.  To become a senior companion, volunteers must be age 60 or over, meet income eligibility requirements, and pass a physical. Volunteers enjoy a tax-free stipend for their time, meal and mileage reimbursement, monthly training sessions, and paid time off.
