Private College Day Tuesday

(Cedar Rapids-KWWL) Mount Mercy College Professor of English and Director of Honors Programs Dr. Joy Ochs and freshman Elizabeth Brumm will represent Mount Mercy during a poster presentation for Iowa Private College Day on March 17 at the State Capital in Des Moines.

Iowa Private College Day features the academic work and success of area college students and showcases the strengths of private colleges and the collaboration between faculty and students. Each college will host a station to showcase the work of one of its students. Iowa legislators visit the stations to learn more about the academic work that is being accomplished in Iowa's college institutions.

Ochs and Brumm, an English and public relations major from Cedar Falls, will represent Mount Mercy and showcase the unique faculty-student relationship that Mount Mercy's small class sizes encourage and promote. Brumm will showcase a poster presentation on the Fall 2008 honors course coordinated by Ochs. The course was a pilot program that combined service learning with community building, and focused extensively on the devastating June 2008 floods. Brumm, along with fellow classmates, collected responses and flood reactions from city residents, business owners, and other community members and documented responses with both video and photography. Ochs lead the class in exploring issues of social justice and integrated Mount Mercy's mission to serve others into the program as a way of familiarizing freshmen to Mount Mercy's distinct service learning curriculum.

The work the class put together on the flood and its aftermath was donated to The History Center in Cedar Rapids. Brumm was also invited to participate in Snapshot New York, where she presented the flood photos at an exhibit alongside other college students from across the country.
