Iowa bar's license suspended over smoking ban

IOWA CITY (KWWL) -- An Ottumwa bar is fighting the law, but so far the law is winning over the state's smoking ban.

Monday, the owner's of "The Keg", an Ottumwa bar, admitted to violating the state's smoking ban and now the state is suspending the bar's liquor license suspended for seven days.

An administrative law judge in Iowa City on Monday also fined The Keg $1,000.

Representatives of three Ottumwa bars gave testimony in front of the administrative law judge, including The Keg, Smokin' Joes and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 775. All were cited for multiple violations of the smoking ban.

The fine and suspension handed down Monday came hours after representatives for The Keg testified.

Commander Denny Whitson of the VFW in Ottumwa says the smoking ban is unconstitutional and violates his rights. Whitson says he won't obey a liquor license suspension if it is handed down.
