Associated Press - March 2, 2010 12:24 PM ET

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - A member of a Des Moines church has thwarted the efforts of burglars to make off with four pieces of conduit pipe and two spools of wire from the building.

Authorities say the attempted burglary of the First United Methodist Church took place shortly after Sunday services were completed.

Police say a man was spotted carrying the pipe and wires outside. He put the items down and walked away. While he was gone a member of the church's staff picked up the material and took it back inside the church.

According to a police report, the man returned to the church in a bright blue car with a cord on the trunk. However, the mand drove off before anyone could get a license plate number.
