Iowa mom faces sentencing in son's killing

Associated Press - December 15, 2009 9:04 AM ET

INDEPENDENCE, Iowa (AP) - An Iowa mother convicted of killing one son and trying to kill her other son faces a mandatory sentence of life in prison without parole.

Michelle Kehoe, of Coralville, is to be sentenced on Tuesday. A jury convicted her last month of first-degree murder, attempted murder and child endangerment.

Prosecutors say Kehoe drove her two sons to a pond near Littleton in rural Buchanan County in October 2008, where she covered their faces with duct tape and cut their throats with a knife.

Her 2-year-old son, Seth, died. Her 7-year-old son, Sean, survived. Kehoe also cut her own throat and was hospitalized for weeks.

Kehoe's trial was moved to Grundy County because of pre-trial publicity. She pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity.
