IOWA CITY (KWWL) -- Hayden Fry retired as head coach of Iowa Hawkeyes November 23, 1998. It followed the worst season he ever had as coach.
Iowa was 3-8 overall, and 2-6 in the conference. Later, Fry revealed he coached that season while undergoing treatments for prostate cancer. He may be best known for painting the visiting team's locker room pink.
This past summer, 1st Avenue in Coralville was renamed Hayden Fry Way. The stretch of road is heavily traveled by Hawkeye fans on gameday. Fry took the road to work every day for 20 years.
