DUBUQUE, IA (KWWL) - The Triple D Winter Race will be returning to Dubuque County again this January. It takes place this Saturday, January 10 with a shotgun start at 10:00 a.m. Foot racers and skiers will start at the beginning of Heritage Trail in Dyersville while bikers will start at the Grand River Center in Dubuque, ride the Heritage Trail to Dyersville, turn around and make their way back to Dubuque.
The race was started by Lance Andre and a couple of other local Winter Ultra racers as a way to prepare for the Arrowhead Ultra race in International Falls, MN which is in early February. The first race was last year and announced only 30 days before the event. Nearly 60 racers registered.
In last years race, the temperature during the day was -9 degrees F with a wind chill of -30 degrees F. Dave Prammen, Arrowhead world record holder had to drop from the race with only 10 miles to go. Of the 60 racers that registered only 3 skiers, 7 runners and 4 bikers were able to complete the entire race. The last person to finish spent over 9 and a half hours in -30 degree wind chill," stated Lance Andre, event organizer. "The Triple D race is more about finishing than it is about winning, but a race it is."
