Hawkeye Honors Black History Month

(Waterloo-KWWL) From a homeless and penniless teenager to a millionaire by age 26. That's the storyline on Andres Lara, a refugee from Cuba, who came to the United States with nothing but a desire for freedom and a determination to succeed.

Andres Lara will be the keynote speaker, when Hawkeye Community College celebrates its 3^rd annual Multicultural Visit day, as part of Black History month, February 24, on the main Hawkeye campus. Lara came to America with no money and speaking no English. He will share his inspirational success story with participants.

This annual event is open to high school students and parents are also urged to attend. The event puts special emphasis on promoting diversity and awareness. Lunch will be provided, as participants enjoy what it's like on the Hawkeye Community College campus.

Prizes will also be awarded, including an Ipod and a ‘Gift of Class.' Event-goers will learn about campus life and tour the Hawkeye campus. Hawkeye Community College instructors and current students will also be on hand to answer questions

To take part, just call the Hawkeye Admissions Office at 319-296-4000. Space is limited, so participants are encouraged to RSVP. The Hawkeye main campus is located at 1501 East Orange Road in Waterloo. The event will get underway at 8:45 am, concluding at 1 pm.
