Wartburg, W-S-R Partnership Helps Students

Posted:

A new partnership will help kids by pairing them with students from Wartburg College in Waverly. The Wartburg College Social Work Department developed this new partnership with the Lied Education Center on the Bremwood campus . The Social Work Department will also continue its partnership with resource students at the Waverly-Shell Rock Junior High School.

A class, called "Meeting the Needs of Children," mentors and tutors students at both the Lied Education Center and W-S-R Junior High. This class focuses on foster care, day care, protective services and residential living. Students study concepts, policies and practices designed to meet the needs of children. Dr. Tammy Faux, Assistant professor of Social Work at Wartburg College, teaches the class. Dr. Faux is a former child protection and child welfare social worker with more than ten years of experience teaching social work courses.

Another class pairs students with Wartburg College with students from the Lied Education Center or with Jill Boerigter's seventh-grade strategies class at Waverly-Shell Rock Junior High. This also involves tutoring and mentoring once a week. Boerigter works with special education students in the W-S-R School District and also worked at the Bremwood School earlier in her career, before transferring to the junior high school.

Both partnerships come from a State Farm service-learning grant, written by Boerigter and Faux in 2007. The State Farm grant supports a two-year service-learning partnership between colleges and junior high schools.
