Woman pleads not guilty for stealing book

Posted:

INDEPENDENCE (AP) -- An Independence woman accused of failing to return an overdue book to the Jesup Public Library is due in court next month to face a theft charge.

A Feb. 25 hearing is set for Shelly Koontz. She was charged last week with fifth-degree theft.

Koontz was arrested for not returning "The Freedom Writers Diary," a book valued at $13.95 that she checked out last April.

Independence attorney James Peters on Tuesday entered a written plea of not guilty on behalf of Koontz in Buchanan County court.
