DUBUQUE (KWWL) - A major announcement in Dubuque Thursday. 1,300 jobs will come to the area starting this summer. IBM will run an information technology center downtown in the Dubuque Building; KWWL's old bureau office.
The news reaches far beyond the city. In a city where people say "never on a cold day in Dubuque would IBM come to town," on the a cold January morning IBM announced it's latest investment.
At a press conference Thursday morning IBM announced it will open a new technology service delivery center in Dubuque. This announcement comes just days after layoffs a John Deere in Dubuque.
The Greater Dubuque Development Corporation, along with IBM, has signed a 10 year lease at the Historic Roshek building; known as the Dubuque Building.
It's announcement that has official in Dubuque excited and proud.
"Yes we are extremely proud that ibm choose dubuque for this project and anticipate many tangibles to be realized now and into the future," said Mayor Roy Buol.
The Mayor says this also goes along with Dubuque goal of sustainability. IBM intends to fill several hundred jobs by the end of the year, all 1,300 by 2010. The Telegraph Herald reports the 1,300 jobs, primarily IT positions, will pay an average of $45,000 per year.
