Financial boost for diabetes research at UI

IOWA CITY (KWWL) -- Diabetes research gets a $25 Million boost at the University of Iowa.

The Fraternal Order of Eagles announced their pledge to raise that money.  The University will cover the cost of construction of the new facility, which will go up next to the medical education and research facility.

The announcement is especially exciting for Greg Martin, Vice President of the Eagles, who has type-2 diabetes.

"It's gonna benefit approximately 20 million americans with diabetes, and we are confident we will find a cure here at the University of Iowa," said Greg Martin.

The University says it will match the Eagles' $25 Million pledge.  They say the facility will allow researchers to further explore how diabetes actually occurs.
