Iowa Department of Transportation (Iowa DOT) officials sent out this release about the Iowa 24 bridge in Winneshiek County at Fort Atkinson.
The newly constructed Iowa 24 bridge traverses overflow waters from the Turkey River. As a result of recent flash flooding, an Iowa, Chicago and Eastern Railroad bridge upstream from the highway bridge collapsed.
The debris from the collapsed bridge redirected the flow of the flood waters. The flood waters undermined the south approach of the bridge, causing the approach to collapse. The bridge itself was not damaged.
The Iowa DOT is making arrangements for a contractor to repair the approach. In the meantime, the bridge remains closed. Traffic is being detoured onto Winneshiek County Road B-32 to Iowa 150 north to Calmar.
