Truck crash, ice complicates Iowa deputy's job

Associated Press - March 3, 2010 2:34 PM ET

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - Deputy Brandon Hamilton loves his new job with the Washington County sheriff's office, but he's had enough excitement for a while.

In the past 2 1/2 months, he's been hit by a truck and taken a plunge into an icy river.

When a snowstorm hit Iowa in late December, Hamilton was helping a driver who slid off a highway when a truck slammed into the sheriff department's Ford Explorer. Hamilton cut his hand on broken glass. No one else was hurt.

Last Sunday, Hamilton went to the English River near Wellman, where a stolen safe had been tossed onto the ice. When Hamilton walked out to check it out, he plunged into the river.

Hamilton was rescued, and he's OK.

Sheriff Jerry Dunbar says his new deputy is a "super, great guy," but was in the wrong place at the wrong time.
