WASHINGTON COUNTY (KWWL) -- Three Washington County men are being credited with saving the life of a sheriff's deputy that fell through the ice over the weekend.

Three men were out riding four-wheelers on Sunday, when they noticed a safe lying on the ice of the English River.

After Levi Powell called it in to the dispatch center, Deputy Brandon Hamilton was called out to investigate it.

Powell and Deputy Hamilton walked out on the ice to take pictures and recover the safe.

When Deputy Hamilton stopped to take a picture, the ice gave way, sending him into the icy water.

He was able to resurface and grab the ice, but that section of ice then gave way sending the deputy into the water for a second time.

Deputy Hamilton was able to resurface again and this time Powell laid down on his stomach, reached out his hands and pulled Deputy Hamilton out of the water.

Once the deputy was out of the water, Powell's friends, Jeremy Brokaw and Cory Kanagy helped pull them up over the bank and got the deputy into their truck to warm up.

Deputy Hamilton was taken to Mercy Hospital in Iowa City where he was treated and released.

The Washington County Sheriff's Office would like to extend a big thank you to the three men for saving Deputy Hamilton from the frigid waters of the English River.
