Iowa man presumed dead in Mississippi River

Associated Press - February 8, 2010 8:34 AM ET

FORT MADISON, Iowa (AP) - Authorities say a man is presumed dead after falling through the ice on the Mississippi River at Fort Madison.

Police got a report about 2 a.m. Sunday that 22-year-old Ray Dean, of Keokuk, had fallen through the ice about 100 feet from shore.

Emergency crews searched the bank and the river, but they could not find Dean. On the water, searchers had to deal with frigid temperatures and fast-moving ice.

Fire Chief Joey Herren says the search was suspended about 5:30 a.m. because big chunks of ice were popping up next to the boat, and he was afraid the ice was going to overturn it.

Herren says Dean and a friend were walking along the river when Dean wandered on the ice and fell in. The friend called for help.
