Waverly family loses everything in house fire

WAVERLY (KWWL) - A Waverly family lost everything in a house fire Tuesday morning.

According to the Waverly Fire Department, a fire started at 1007 East Bremer Avenue around 8:30 a.m.

Jennifer Snitker was at the home with five children when the fire started in the kitchen.

One of the children alerted other family members that a fire had started and everyone was able to make it out of the home safely.

Eric Ackerson was already at work at the time of the fire.

The family lost everything in the fire including Christmas gifts.  Red Cross volunteer Ron Hurley said the kids received lots of winter gear, including jackets and boots, as presents last week.  They were some of the first items destroyed in the fire, according to Hurley.

The Red Cross is assisting the family with hotel accommodations.  Hurley told KWWL they not only found a place to house the large family, the Red Cross was able to locate a temporary home for their dogs and bird.

Hurley noted, "it makes it really tough around the holidays.  And New Year's is coming... it's going to be a tough way to start the new year off."

He said the Red Cross will continue providing assistance to family members as they begin the recovery process.

No cause of the fire has been determined.
