Holiday travelers coming home on Christmas

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) The best Christmas presents aren't always the ones underneath the tree.

"We just have gathered every year, despite where people are living," said Cheryl Moe of Cedar Rapids.

For 30 years Cheryl and her family have gotten together on Christmas.

For the first time in three decades, this Moe family tradition was in jeopardy.

"I just kept watching to see how the weather patterns were moving in, and we had worries from all directions," said Moe.

Cheryl was expecting family from some of the hardest hit spots in the country.

Relatives from Oklahoma, Kansas City, Minnesota, and Colorado were all able to make it in to Cedar Rapids, in spite of this week's massive winter storm.

Cheryl and her sister-in-law Becky waited anxiously at the Eastern Iowa Airport Friday for the final person of the 15 member group to arrive, Becky's daughter Beth.

"We were the last to arrive except for our little Christmas blessing that's coming in from Boston," said Becky.

"We're just so excited that this last person is supposed to be here," said Cheryl.

And sure enough, Beth's connecting flight from Minneapolis made it in only 30 minutes late.

The Moe's say this Christmas they are more thankful than ever to have family together under one roof.

"It's definitely the best Christmas gift we could have," said Cheryl.
