AMES (KWWL) -- The city of Ames and Iowa State University will soon buy wind-generated electricity from a farm near Zearing.
Officials say the plan is to buy enough wind power to supply 30 megawatts of output for Ames and six megawatts for the university. That totals about 15 percent of the electricity needs of Ames and about 10 percent of the university's need.
The electricity will come from a farm constructed by NextEra Energy Resources.
ISU assistant director Jeff Witt says winter is the best time for wind energy in Iowa.
