Iowa students nominated for West Point

WASHINGTON, D.C. (KWWL) - Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA) nominated 43 Iowa students for appointments to the U.S. Air Force Academy, Naval Academy, Merchant Marine Academy and Military Academy, West Point for 2010.

In a typical year, Harkin receives more than 150 applications from young Iowans interested in pursuing a career as a military officer. Students apply for admission to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York; the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, Maryland; the U.S. Air Force Academy at Colorado Springs, Colorado or the Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, New York.

Harkin nominates up to ten applicants to compete for each available vacancy. Academy nomination finalists are interviewed by Senator Harkin's Academy Selection Board, during which time their motivation, poise and self-expression are measured. From the Senator's nominees, the academy then selects the final candidate who will be offered an appointment.

"In order for an individual to be nominated, he or she must demonstrate superior leadership, academic and athletic abilities," Harkin said. "Nominees also must exhibit the necessary motivation for serving in the demanding role of a career military officer and be of outstanding moral character."

After March 1, 2010, men and women between the ages of 17 and 22 who are interested in pursuing a nomination to one of the academies for the class entering in 2011 should go to www.Harkin.Senate.Gov and complete Senator Harkin's online Service Academy Application, or they may contact Senator Harkin's Cedar Rapids Office at (319) 365-4504.

Anamosa

Evan Buck has been nominated to the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. Evan is the son of Connie and Michael Buck is a senior at Anamosa High School High School.

Atkins

Joseph Gallet has been nominated to the U.S. Naval Academy. Joseph is the son of Lisa and Andre Gallet and is a senior at George Washington High School.

Bettendorf

Andrew Hill has been nominated to the U.S. Miltary Academy. Andrew is the son of Denise and Kevin Hill and is a senior at Bettendorf High School.

Burlington

Emily Mae Bohnenkamp has been nominated to the U.S. Air Force Academy. Emily is the daughter of Rose and Bruce Bohnenkamp is a senior at Notre Dame High School.

Cedar Falls

Timothy Toerner has been nominated to the U.S. Air Force Academy. Timothy is the son of Mary Jane Toerner and Scott Toerner and is a senior at Cedar Falls High School.

Cedar Rapids

Ike Hasley has been nominated to the U.S. Air Force Academy. Ike is the son of Mary and John Hasley and is a senior at Xaivier High School.

Eric Shreck has been nominated to the U.S. Air Force Academy. Eric is the son of Cordula and David Schreck and is a graduate of Xavier High School. He is currently attending the U.S. Air Force Academy Preparatory School in Colorado.

Centerville

Ethan Moorman has been nominated to the U.S. Miltary Academy. Ethan is the son of Gail and Fred Moorman and is a senior at Centerville High School.

Cherokee

Daniel Bieber has been nominated to the U.S. Air Force Academy. Daniel is the son of JoAnn and Jim Bieber and is a senior at Washington High School.

Clear Lake

Zachary Johnson has been nominated to the U.S. Miltary Academy. Zachary is the son of Naomi and Scott Johnson and is a senior at Clear Lake High School.

Clive

Ian Conte has been nominated to the U.S. Naval Academy. Ian is the son of Gwen and Paul Conte and is a senior at Valley High School.

Council Bluffs

Alex Cleaveland has been nominated to the U.S. Naval Academy. Alex is the son of Valerie Johnson and Barry Cleaveland and is a senior at Abraham Lincoln High School.

Cumming

Max Crum has been nominated to the U.S. Miltary Academy. Max is the son of Susan and Phil Crum and is a senior at Norwalk Community High School.

Davenport

Rebecca Wilder has been nominated to the U.S. Naval Academy. Rebecca is the daughter of Mary and Bernard Wilder and is a senior at Davenport Central High School.

Des Moines

Nicholas Hurley has been nominated to the U.S. Miltary Academy. Nicholas is the son of Trudy Goss-Hurley and John Hurley and is a graduate of Urbandale High School. He is currently attending the University of Iowa.

Matthew Rogowski has been nominated to the U.S. Miltary Academy. Matthew is the son of Kristine and Joseph Rogowski and is a senior at Lincoln High School.

Zach Sommers has been nominated to the U.S. Naval Academy. Zach is the son of Renee and Floyd Sommers and is a senior at Saydel High School.

Fairfield

Zachary Matson has been nominated to the U.S. Miltary Academy. Zachary is the son of ColleenMatson and Charlie Matson and is a graduate of Farifield High School. He is currently attending Iowa State University

Granville

Daniel Allen has been nominated to the U.S. Miltary Academy. Daniel is the son of Aspen and Bryan Allen was home schooled. He is currently attending Northwest Iowa Community College.

Indianola

Lance Parker has been nominated to the U.S. Miltary Academy. Lance is the son of Julie and Dennis Parker and is a senior at Indianola High School.

Kalona

Michael Leedy has been nominated to the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. Michael is the son of Mary and John Leedy and is a graduate of the Mid-Prairie Homes School Assistance Program. He is currently attending Kirkwood Community College.

Lowden

Joshua Chappell has been nominated to the U.S. Miltary Academy. Joshua is the son of JoAnn and Matt Chappell and is a senior at North Cedar High School.

Marion
